Ochotona

A mission-driven digital infrastructure consultancy serving nonprofits, artists, and organizations working for the public good.

Digital infrastructure has become increasingly complex and centralized. Mission-focused organizations face mounting pressure to surrender control of their data and systems to large tech companies whose values and practices often don’t align with their own.

Ochotona offers an alternative. We design, build, manage, and advise on resilient, secure digital infrastructure that keeps you in control.

Our approach rests on these principles:

  • Data sovereignty — maintain ownership and control of your data.
  • Open source — use of open software you can inspect and modify.
  • Security & privacy — strong, multi-layered security and encryption.
  • Infrastructure resilience — systems you can understand and build upon.
  • Communication — an emphasis on clear documentation and knowledge transfer.

We work with environmental groups, cultural organizations, research institutions, independent media, artists, and local governments worldwide. Our clients come to us when they need help building robust systems while maintaining (or regaining) control of their digital presence, and want the infrastructure they depend on to reflect and amplify their own goals and priorities.

We favor simplicity over unnecessary complexity, relying on a mix of battle-tested open source solutions alongside the latest networking, security, and communications tools. And we support a healthy open source ecosystem by returning 10% of all profits to the projects we and our partners rely on.

While we typically take on new work through referrals, we’re always happy to help. If you’d like to discuss your needs, get in touch.

We have worked with Stefan for our digital infrastructure and security for more than a decade and could not be happier with the level of service we receive. His genuine approach to what suits our needs best is invaluable, his knowledge and expertise are world class and, crucially, he is a pleasure to work with.
